Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) at a glance
Leipzig/Halle Airport (IATA code: LEJ) is situated in Schkeuditz, approximately 18 kilometres north-west of Leipzig and the same distance north-east of Halle (Saale), and thus serves the whole of central Germany. Since its opening on 25 April 1927, the airport has developed into one of Germany’s most important aviation hubs, covering an area of around 1,400 hectares.
Two terminals, A and B, connected by a wide pedestrian walkway, and two runways ensure smooth operations. In 2024, around 2.2 million passengers were handled, with the most popular destinations being Turkey, Spain, Greece and Egypt. The total number of flight movements stood at around 76,800 take-offs and landings.
What really sets Leipzig/Halle Airport apart is its outstanding role in global freight transport. With around 1.4 million tonnes of air freight in 2024, it is Europe’s fifth-largest air freight hub and the world’s largest DHL hub. Over 70 cargo airlines connect LEJ with almost 200 destinations worldwide. This round-the-clock operation also benefits passengers: early departures and late arrivals are no problem at LEJ.
